Victor Hugo, the Interior Designer – Paris exhibition

Explore Victor Hugo’s lesser-known talent as a decorator at the exhibition “Hugo décorateur” in Paris. Visitors will see how the great French writer transformed his homes into living works of art. The exhibition commenced on 13 November 2025 and continues until April 26, 2026.

He had two homes – one in Paris at Place des Vosges, and one home called Hauteville House on the island of Guernsey, off the northern French coast of Normandy.

Victor Hugo (1802-1885) is best known for his novels Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, yet  few know that Hugo was also an inspired interior designer.

The exhibition “Hugo décorateur” at the Maison de Victor Hugo (House of Victor Hugo) reveals this private passion. In both homes, Hugo designed everything, from the furniture to the wood panels, and even the wallpaper, mostly in the Gothic revival style.
